FIV+ Cats: The Truth
Feline Immunodeficiency Virus (FIV) is one of the most misunderstood feline diagnoses. It is not a death sentence — most FIV+ cats live full, normal lifespans with no special medical care.
What FIV is
FIV is a slow-acting virus similar in some ways to HIV in humans. It cannot be transmitted to people, dogs, or other species. Between cats, it transmits primarily through deep bite wounds — the kind that happen between intact males in fights, not through shared food bowls or grooming.
Living with an FIV+ cat
- Keep them indoors and away from un-vaccinated outdoor cats.
- Routine vet care — annual exams and dental cleanings are especially important.
- FIV+ cats can live with FIV-negative cats in a peaceful household.
Why we say "adopt FIV+"
FIV+ cats are often passed over at shelters. They tend to be some of the most loving, gentle cats we have — and adopting one saves a life that otherwise wouldn't get a second look.
